Chiropractic Explained By Dr Debbie Saxton
Tuesday 01 July
Many of you have a concern regarding chiropractic treatment techniques – “the crack!” - so I thought it would be helpful to explain some techniques to you.
Chiropractors use a variety of different techniques to treat patients. Most chiropractors graduate from university with proficiency in Diversified technique. However, all chiropractors at the Family Chiropractic Clinic have carried out further training in other techniques since graduating. In particular, all of our chiropractors have studied a relatively new, low force, gentle technique called Neuro Impulse Protocol (NIP). NIP is a system of analysis and treatment to determine the function of the nervous system and correct that function without force. In order to interpret the function of the nervous system a strict protocol and order of examination must be followed. The entire examination is led by neurological findings and not pain patterns.
The adjustment is a hold and impulse technique directed to restore normal neurological function without force. There is no audible crack or movement of a bone. However as soon as normal nerve impulse function is restored movement at the joint segment returns, muscle spasm decrease and the compensation patterns disappear.
This technique offers a forward step in chiropractic care and avoids any force on the spinal joints - making it 100% safe for people of all ages and suffering from all conditions.
Drop Technique
This technique uses an adjusting table with sections that can be set to drop down a short distance when pressure is applied. The movement of the table is approximately one inch. As pressure is applied onto the joint the table drops and the joint moves further, using gravity and body weight to facilitate the movement.
Diversified
Diversified Technique assesses the joints biomechanically and aims to restore movement in a specific direction by using a high velocity, low amplitude impulse to the individual joint. A 'pop' or 'click' may be heard; this is caused by a change in pressure within the joint. Although some patients may be satisfied to hear a click, this noise does not reflect the effectiveness of the adjustment in any way.
Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT)
SOT is a system of examination and treatment which aims to restore normal relationship and function between the pelvis (sacrum) and upper spine/cranium (occipital). It involves the use of cranial work and blocks placed underneath the pelvis whilst the patient lies on the adjusting table.
Activator Adjusting Instrument
This is a hand held spring-loaded instrument that can be used to give a high speed, low force impulse into the joint to initiate movement and stimulate the nervous system. It is a very gentle and the amount of force used during the impulse can be adjusted according to the person.
The treatment used is always chosen because it is the most appropriate to that patient’s age, condition and symptom presentation. Options are always discussed at the initial appointment so any doubts and fears can be addressed. Chiropractic care is an incredibly safe form of treatment and as you will realise from the list above there are many types of treatments that can be tailored to your specific needs.
